Curriculum Overview

Curriculum at Merchants’ Academy

The Curriculum at Merchants’ Academy is designed to ensure that each individual student is educated and supported so that they can successfully with the world today. The Academy offers a wide variety of subjects at different levels as well as ensuring that every student follows a core curriculum that enables them to access their future goals. The curriculum for each part of the Academy is outlined below.  Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) as well as employability skills are embedded throughout the curriculum and within a comprehensive tutorial programme.

Curriculum in Reception to Year 6

In Nursery and Reception classes all students follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. The whole primary follow the Read Write Inc programme for phonics and reading after which they progress to Literacy and Language. In writing in Years 1-3 they follow a model based on the talk for writing programme and continue writing with Literacy and Language through Year 4 - 6. Spelling and handwriting programmes are in place. In maths we follow the Mathematics Mastery programme. In the Foundation subjects we use the Edison Learning programme which is based upon the national curriculum, themed into topics. The topics are then mapped to ensure coverage across the Primary. Edison also provide core learning skills to support the PSHE curriculum. RE follows the Bristol agreed syllabus. ICT computing is taught through the Rising Stars scheme of learning. PE and music are taught by teachers and outside provision is included.

Curriculum in Years 7, 8 and 9

In Years 7 - 9 prior assessment and baseline testing at the start of Year 7 are used to set students by ability as appropriate to different subjects. This is done to ensure that students maximise progress. Year 9 has a particular focus of building a foundation for GCSE study the following year.
