Born, brought up and educated in Bristol. Trained to be a teacher at Bristol University. Taught History at Withywood School, Bristol 1978-1992. Became Deputy Headteacher at Torquay Boys' Grammar School, Devon 1992-1997 and then Headteacher at Churston Ferrers Grammar School, Devon 1997-2007. The school achieved an outstanding rating in every one of the 36 categories inspected by Ofsted in April 2006. Achieved his lifetime ambition of returning to Withywood to lead the new Merchants' Academy as Principal in April 2007.
