Maths Success Wins Students a Trip to see Man Utd

Abby Hewitt and Jordan Bailey won the tickets after their names were entered into a ballot along with all those Year 11 students who attended a full programme of mathematics revision sessions before Christmas.

The tickets were donated by Academy Governor and Chairman of Merchants’ Academy Services Ltd Peter McCarthy, who grew up in Manchester and is a lifelong season ticket holder. He will be accompanying the students to the game at the weekend, which sees Manchester United take on Portsmouth in the Premier League.

Mr McCarthy said: “I am delighted to be taking the students to see the match – I hope they enjoy it.

“I had 3 tickets and was happy to donate them as an incentive, as I thought that the students might enjoy seeing a game. I am glad that so many of them worked hard and studied for their exams. Their good results are a credit to the Academy.”

Academy Principal Stephen Kings said: “The Academy would like to thank Mr McCarthy for his generosity. I know this experience will be very memorable for Abby and Jordan.

“It is the unwavering support of our Governors that allows our students to have access to the very best opportunities and for that we are very grateful.

“We definitely try to encourage a rewards culture at the Academy, and are very proud of the dedication and commitment with which Year 11 approached the maths exam in November. All their hard work has paid off with over 20 students achieving a grade C or above, nearly 7 months in advance!”
