Academy Submits Proposal for All-Through School

Categories: School News

'All-through schools' cater for youngsters of all ages; from nursery/reception classes, through primary and secondary stages, right up to sixth form.

At an extraordinary meeting on Monday evening, the governors of Gay Elms Primary considered all the potential benefits for the children in developing an all-through Academy and these were considered to be greater than the possible disadvantages. This was reflected in the vote taken at the end of the meeting with the majority of governors voting in favour of submitting the Expression of Interest form. Merchants’ Academy governors voted unanimously to do the same on 7th July.

The Department of Education will consider the Expression of Interest form during the summer holiday and, if approved, the next step will be to commission a feasibility survey. This will involve full consultation with all stakeholders including parents and carers, staff, governors, the community and Trade Unions led by an independent company. It is anticipated that the consultation period will take several months in order to ensure that all stakeholders are given the opportunity to express their opinions.

Academy Principal Stephen Kings said: "As you will appreciate this is the early stage of a process which could take up to a year before a final decision is made by the Department of Education. The governors will endeavour to keep parents and carers informed of each step and how events are progressing. If you have any questions regarding the all-through Academy please see me."
