Merchants' Academy uses the WJEC Examination Board
GCSE English
1. A useful website for revision is GCSE Bitesize www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/
For revision use the following sections only:
- Reading non-fiction texts
- Writing to analyse, review and comment
- Writing to argue, persuade and advise
- Writing to imagine, explore and entertain
- Writing to inform, explain and describe.
2. You also have your revision workbook from your class teacher which is an important tool in getting yourself ready for the examination.
3. Another useful website is www.mysterynet.com where you can read short stories with a twist. Try to track the clues that build up to the ending. Good for your reading skills as well as giving you ideas for stories in the examination.
4. Keep up to date with the news by reading the paper every day. It will keep you informed of all current affairs and topics that you may well be able to use in Paper 2.
GCSE English Literature
1 All students will study Steinbeck's famous novel Of Mice and Men. You will then study a play, either An Inspector Calls or Blood Brothers and some poetry.
- The LRC currently stocks Revision Guides for Of Mice and Men and An Inspector Calls and both are very useful.
- Both texts also have a section on GCSE Bitesize http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/english_literature/ which is also useful.
2 Another good website to revise these texts is www.gradesaver.com/author/john-steinbeck/
3 To practise writing about unseen poetry, try the website www.poetrymagazines.org.uk
