House Structure
Merchants' Academy believes that pastoral care and a sense of community is fundamental to any students development, and with this in mind, we operate a 'House System'. A students 'House', is like their family, and very much centred in terms of student welfare.
We have four 'Houses' at Merchants', each represented by a different colour and each named after a famous 'Gate' to the city of Bristol, to encourage students to look outward from their immediate community.
These are: Castle (yellow), Frome (green), Lawfords (blue) and Temple (red).
Each 'House' has ten personal tutor groups, consisting of students of all ages, from Year 7 through to Year 12, to encourage interaction and camaraderie across the year groups. No personal tutor group has more than 20 members, which means that every student can expect one-to-one support from their tutor.
Merchants' Academy encourages friendly competition between the 'Houses', and through them actively celebrates achievement and teamwork, giving students the opportunity to represent their 'House' in academic and co-curricular activities.
