Humanities

Welcome to our Curriculum Area!

The Humanities curriculum area at Merchants’ Academy is an exciting and fulfilling place to work. We have a strong team ethic with highly motivated staff and a focus on student engagement.

Teaching and Learning

We have strong leadership throughout our staff team, with a coherent vision for raising student achievement through active participation in teaching and learning. We have highly skilled teachers who are committed to delivering excellent lessons in all three Humanities disciplines. We offer many co-curricular activities, which provide excellent opportunities for students to access an integrated enrichment programme. We are also privileged to be part of the International Baccalaureate teaching programme.

Friendly and welcoming

A key strength of the Humanities curriculum area at Merchants’ Academy is its team ethic. All teachers operate an open door policy to promote support and the sharing of ideas. Staff are positively encouraged to work together in planning and delivery of lessons on an ongoing basis. We actively share new teaching and learning activities through peer observations and the sharing of good practice via regular meetings. As an experienced team, we have a highly effective support programme in place for the induction of new staff within the curriculum area.

Within the Key Stage 3 curriculum we are always looking to improve our schemes of work and follow a process of termly evaluation. This has led to a significant increase in the uptake of Humanities subjects at Key stage 4. This has been a result of constantly looking for innovative ways of teaching Humanities in a fun and relevant way to engage our pupils.

Development

Next year will see the development and delivery of continuous assessment as a key focus of the Curriculum Area.  Our second focus will be building on the successful development of learning based outside the classroom as we firmly believe that it is imperative Humanities is experienced in the real world and brought to life.

If you would like to find out more about the Humanities curriculum area, or discuss positions available further, please do not hesitate to contact Jo Whitfield, the Humanities Subject Leader.
