Welcome to our Curriculum Area!
The Mathematics curriculum area at Merchants’ Academy is an exciting and fulfilling place to work. Our strong team ethic encourages staff motivation and enthusiasm from new and experienced teachers alike and keeps students engaged and enthused.
Teaching
The department has a coherent vision for raising student achievement by encouraging participation in mathematical learning activities across all areas of study. The curriculum area is fortunate to have a number of highly skilled teachers who are buddied with new staff to support the acceleration of successful teaching practice. The development of co-curricular enrichment activities and new curricula (IB) has been delegated across the teaching team to ensure each member of staff contributes to the success of the department.
A key strength of the Mathematics curriculum area at Merchants’ Academy is its team ethic. All teachers operate an open door policy to promote support and the sharing of ideas. Staff are positively encouraged to work together through staff buddying and the collaborative development of KS3 schemes of work. Learning activities and resources are shared throughout the curriculum area on an ongoing basis, with team teaching used to share classroom teaching and behaviour management approaches.
Learning
Developments made to enhance student engagement within the current academic year include the collaborative re-writing of Year 7 and Year 8 Schemes of Work, and the introduction of Maths in Motion, a hands on practical project about the mathematics of movement.
Further development will see the extension of these initiatives into Key Stage 4, and the creation of a wider range of targeted enrichment activities for students at different stages of their mathematics learning. We will also be delivering a continuous assessment of the Curriculum Area, supported by a partnership project with other academies with a focus on further achievement in mathematics.
