Uniform and Standards
All Merchants students including year seven will be expected to follow the Academy Standards. You will be expected to be in correct uniform at all times and act as an ambassador for the school. You will be the focal point, and the first students to experience all of their secondary education at Merchants’ Academy. I have been given an excellent opportunity work with you to ensure that you are an example to other students across Bristol.
Curriculum
The year seven curriculum will be delivered by individual curriculum areas. Some curriculum areas may collaborate for certain projects. A central theme will be in place every term. All curriculum areas will tie into this theme where possible to develop your learning across curriculum areas. Your homework may also fit into this theme. Six themes are planned for six terms across the year.
Co-curricular studies
There will be an extensive range of co-curricular activities that are planned for session three. These activities will develop you as a learner.
Literacy & Numeracy
The development of your Literacy and Numeracy Skills will act as a foundation for your learning in all other curriculum areas. These key skills are fundamental to you development and therefore will be built into all curriculum areas. Literacy and Numeracy will not simply be taught by Mathematics and English curriculum areas. So that you can prepare and develop your skills I have added some web links below. A few visits may help you in September!

Q&A: From Students
The following questions have been asked by some students that will be attending Merchants’ Academy in September. I have tried to answer them as clearly as possible. If you have a question about moving to Merchants’ Academy, please speak to your Primary School Teacher and they will be able to pass it on to me. I hope this helps easy you worries and prepares you for September.
Question? "I'm Worried that I may get lost and an older student will tell me the wrong way" - Chloe
My Advice
You will be in tutor groups of different ages; this will help you make friends with students in all age groups.
Question? "I'm worried that I will bring the wrong equipment in on the wrong day” - Lauren
My Advice
On your first day just bring a pen, a pencil and some paper to write on. Your teachers will tell you what you need to bring to lessons. All students will be given a personal planner. This is like a diary and will help you organise yourself. You will also have a locker. For most of your lessons, there will only be two lessons per day, so there is less to remember.
Question? "I'm afraid about the punishment and how strict the teachers are." - Sophie
My Advice
The Academy has three clear standards that are to everybody’s benefit. Stick to these, approach your learning in a positive and there should be no problems.
Question? "We are worried about being bullied by older students"
My Advice
The Academy will not tolerate any bullying. If it happens then inform your personal tutor and it will be addressed. The Academy is organised in vertical tutor groups. This will help you make friends in other year groups. These students can support you.
Question? "We are worried about being told off for being late" - Connor, Connor, Georgia, Dani
My Advice
The Academy expects you to be on time. You will be given time to get to know the Academy at the start of term. Also most of your lessons will be in one building. Where possible, your teachers will collect you from break times.
Question? "Will we get a map of the school?" - Jade, Bonnie, Kayleigh
My Advice
A map will be provided.
Question? "I am worried about my stuff being stolen"
My Advice
All students will be provided with a locker and a padlock. This is your personal space. If you lose the key, you will be expected to buy a new padlock.
