Strong GCSE results for 2018 graduates

23rd August 2018

Students at Merchants’ Academy in South Bristol are celebrating the best English and Maths GCSE results in five years, with 50 per cent of teenagers achieving grade 4 or above, an improvement of 16 percentage points on 2017.

This year, GCSE grades 9-1 have replaced grades A-G, with grade 7 equal to an A and grade 4 similar to a C.

A total of eight subjects saw an improvement in results, including a grade 4 or above achieved by 83 per cent of pupils in Sports Science; 80 per cent in Construction; 77 per cent in Health and Social Care; and 67 per cent in Core Science.

Principal Samantha Williamson said: “These results, especially in English and Maths, show significant improvement on last year and all the pupils and staff should feel very proud of what they have achieved.”

Students who performed particularly well include Honey Templar, who achieved nine grade 7s and above (equivalent to the old A grade), including a grade 9 in English Literature - the highest grade achievable. Honey, from Withywood, was also awarded grade 8s in English, Maths and Science (the equivalent of A*) and a double distinction star in Health and Social Care. She said: “I didn’t know what to expect today but I am so happy that all my hard work has paid off.” Honey has future plans to attend Brighton University to read Psychology, but in the meantime, she will study A-levels in Maths, Further Maths, Business and Psychology at sixth form.

There were tears of joy when Chloe Siddle opened her GCSE results at Merchants’ Academy surrounded by her family. She achieved six grade 7s and above, including a grade 8 in English Language and English Literature as well as a double distinction star in Sports Science. Chloe, who is 16 and lives in Hartcliffe, will now study for A-levels in Maths, Further Maths, English Literature and Computer Science at sixth form. Chloe hopes to follow a career in teaching.

George Pope secured grade 6 and above in eight subjects including a grade 8 in Maths. George, who lives in Hartcliffe, will now study for A-levels in Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology at sixth form. After that, he hopes to study forensic science at university. “I got a taste for it when I did work experience during Y10 at the University of Bristol,” he said. “I’d really like to make a career of it, especially now that my GCSE results have opened up so many opportunities for me.”

Mrs Williamson said that more students than ever before will be going on to the academy’s sixth form in September to continue their studies.

Colin Skellett, Chair of Governors for Merchants’ Academy said: “These are the best results for Merchants’ Academy since 2013, reflecting the hard work of our students and the changes introduced by the new management team, under Sam Williamson, over the last year.

We have much work still to do but these results provide an excellent base from which we can strive to make Merchants’ Academy a centre of academic excellence.”

Merchants’ Academy is part of Venturers Trust, sponsored by the Society of Merchant Venturers and the University of Bristol.
