Merchants’ Academy in south Bristol is celebrating well deserved GCSE results which have earned many students a place in the Academy’s Sixth Form – which only last week announced a record number of A and B grades at A-level, resulting in 92% of students securing university places.

Principal Nick Short said: “The students have worked incredibly hard and I am thrilled that so many will go on to study A-levels and BTEC diploma courses. We are also extremely proud of the students who will now begin work-based training programmes and those who will continue on to vocational college courses, studying a broad range of subjects including health and social care, IT, engineering and sport.”

Individual successes include Sophie Maggs, Lewis Meadows, Megan Frost, Owen Brown and Olivia Phillips – who all achieved 10 A*-C grades, with many at A*-A.

Sophie Maggs from Withywood was delighted with her results, in particular her A* in Biology and her 6 in Maths. Sophie plans to continue her education at Merchants’ Academy Sixth Form, studying A-level Biology, Maths and Sport Science. Sophie’s Dad was thrilled and said: “I’m so proud of Sophie, her results are fantastic. I couldn’t be happier with what she has achieved.”

Olivia Phillips, also from Withywood, is celebrating a first class set of results, including an 8 in Maths. She looks forward to returning to Merchants’ Academy Sixth Form in September to study Drama, Chemistry, Biology and Spanish. Olivia’s mum said that she felt overwhelmed by Olivia’s achievements: “I’m so proud, her results are fab!”

Colin Skellett, Chair of governors at Merchants’ Academy, added “Over the last academic year, we have strengthened the leadership team and introduced a number of new initiatives.  We can be confident that we have a first class team in place and the changes we have made to improve the learning environment means we can anticipate significantly improved results in future. We are determined to make Merchants’ Academy an outstanding school that delivers the best for all our students”.
