Caring for our students mental health
5th -11th February 2018
Throughout this week, the academy has been building awareness on children's mental health (#ChildrensMentalHealthWeek)
The academy continues to encourage all students to celebrate their uniqueness and promotes positive self-image - when children have a positive view of themselves it can help them to cope with life’s challenges.
Students are reminded to look for and recognise the different qualities of others and that connecting with those around us can be vital for their own and others’ wellbeing.
Mental Health Awareness Week
Students this week were reminded about staying safe online and respecting others on social media - 'Create, Connect and Respect' was the National Safer Internet Day 2018 slogan.
Secondary students have been building awareness on Gender Equality and Sexism. Some students stood up in front of their peers in assemblies and discussed gender equality and how it should be tackled in school. This was a great public speaking confidence boost, well done to the girls in Y8 and Y10 that carried out the presentations.
The academy has been having visits from OTR, a mental health social movement by and for young people in Bristol and South Gloucestershire. OTR provides different kinds of free and confidential support as well as exciting opportunities for young people to get involved in locally.
In the academy, OTR have been focusing on raising awareness of mental health and how young people can look after their own mental health. They completed 2 pop ups' other the term, allowing students to find out about the support available in their community and sign up to events. Over these two sessions 78 students have signed up to the social movement, which is great news!
The academy plans to continue working with OTR, with more pop ups planned next term, ensuring mental health is kept at the forefront of our young people’s minds and to make sure they are aware of the support available, if needed.
The academy also offers 1:1 sessions on a Tuesday, available to selected students on cognitive behaviour therapies.
