WHY CHOOSE HISTORY?

History is a much sort after subject to have on your employment CV. Employers value the research, analytical, teamwork and communication skills that history students develop through their studies. Students can go on to become archaeologists, teachers, solicitors, politicians, journalists, museum or gallery curators, historic buildings inspectors, writers, civil servants, researchers or consultants.

 

COURSE INFORMATION

Students will develop an understanding of the historical events, the role of individuals in history and the nature of change over time. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the past through political, social, economic and cultural perspectives. The History department are very much looking forward to supporting you on your journey to achieving a qualification in A Level History over the next two years. As part of the A Level course you be will required to study three units;

• A development study

• A depth study

• A historical investigation

 

HOW WILL YOU BE ASSESSED?

A2 examination papers will cover the content from both years and you will take one set of exams for components one and two at the end of your A2 year. Your coursework (Component 3) will begin at the end of Y12 and continue until the end of Y13.

 

COMPONENT 1 - CONSOLIDATION OF THE TUDOR DYNASTY, ENGLAND, 1485-1603. 2 hour 30 minute written exam TOPICS: Henry VII 1485-1509, Henry VIII 1509-1547, Mid Tudor Crisis 1547-1563, Elizabeth I 1563-1603.

CONTRIBUTION TO FINAL GRADE: 40%

COMPONENT 2 - THE COLD WAR, 1945-1991. 2 hour 30 minute written exam TOPICS: The origins of the Cold War 1945-1949, The Widening of the Cold War 1949-1955 , The Global War 1955-1963, Confrontation and cooperation 1963-1972, The Brezhnev Era 1972-1985, The ending of the Cold War 1985-1991.

CONTRIBUTION TO FINAL GRADE: 40%

COMPONENT 3 - INDIAN INDEPENDENCE FROM THE BRITISH EMPIRE, 1833-1947. Historical Investigations: 3000 words TOPICS: The Indian Mutiny 1857 and its impact, The ‘British Raj’ 1858-1914, The Rise of Indian Nationalism British Politics and India 1919-1939, India and the Second World War, The End of Empire: Withdrawal and Partition 1945-1948.

TO FINAL GRADE: 20%

 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

A minumum of five grades of 4 – 9 at GCSE, including English and Maths, In addition to a grade 6 in History
